By the way, does anyone know where the cover photo for "Live in London" was shot? Not at the concert, obviously. It looks like a TV show shoot. But it would have to be after "Sunflower" (Carl has a beard), but before "Surf's Up" (Bruce is still there).

BBC TV Top Of the Pops, miming to "Tears In The Morning" - hence the accordion ! During the 1970 UK tour: November 18th.

AGD, I'm guessing this footage doesn't exist anymore? I can't believe they mimed THAT, or that 'Tears' was the single. I know it didn't chart in UK, didn't TOTP performances have to be charting ones?

Not back then... and "Tears" was the current single in the UK...

I've always thought of Stack-o-Tracks my favorite cover, with Sunflower and Wild Honey right after that

Surf's Up
No question. Gravitas. And doesn't it express something of the story VDP & BW were trying to tell with SMiLE? A story of how America's expansion, Manifest Destiny and all that, did so much damage, but also, when it hit the water of the Pacific, created a culture that could contain creativity and beauty.
I have always loved the sequence of the last song on Sunflower and the first song on SU. Cool Cool Water followed by Don't Go Near the Water.
Interesting point. That was always my impression of "Heroes and Villains," and that is/was certainly a story worth telling, in the context of an American Experience, but a little "heady" although the "linguistic references" are there (Plymouth Rock) as well as the agrarian images "out in the barnyard," etc. Personally, I always kind of linked Smiley Smile to Surfs Up, and I think an valid argument could be made to link the early settlers to the endpoint of "environmental waste" (despite the coastal beauty images) as the price of "pioneer progress" as an "end product," with "Don't Go Near the Water." I think the group vocals are fabulous on both. But this is a favorite artwork/photography thread (I think?)

Speaking of "Heroes and Villains", that probably has the best single sleeve artwork.

Apart from MOON DAWG who lists it as his least favourite cover, nobody has mentioned mine "15 Big Ones". It has what I want from an album cover, plenty of pics. and info.

I do appreciate the fact that 15 BIG ONES contains complete instrumental credits, one of the few Beach Boys records to do so. But those cheesy fromt cover Olympic ring pics - especially Brian's - were a comedown after all the covers from SUNFLOWER-GOOD VIBES BEST OF.

Yes I agree about the cheesy smiles and the naff olympic logo but it's still my favourite cover. My second favourite is Best Of The Beachboys Vol. 1 (1966), can someone tell me if the UK copy which I've got is the same cover as the Best of Vol. 1 in the states.

It does. All three have the same covers but different tracklistings.

I always image the Today cover being a typical early to mid 1960's type cover, with basic photo and song titles mentioned on the cover. It's a pleasant pic of the young lads. Perhaps it's the records beautiful songs that makes me sympathetic to the cover.
I've never really appreciated the Love You cover, altough I love the Love You album. Sorry Dean (I think it is).
I don't think album cover art has ever really been a strength of The Beach Boys, especially when you compare them to their main competitor: Rubber Soul, Sgt Pepper, White Album, and Abbey Road.

Funny thing about the Today cover I noticed when I originally bought it, back in about '66 or so...
It lists the songs, under the title and picture, in block format, naming 9 of the selections therein and then has a line that says (going from memory).."Plus 3 more great new songs written by Brian Wilson!"
The 3 cuts left off were, "In The Back Of My Mind", "Bull Session With The 'Big Daddy" ", and "I'm So Young". Only one of which is written by Brian. Giving him credit for Bull Session would raise it to one and a fifth. I believe the credits on that song DO list all 5 guys as contributors.
Hardly an earth-shaking revelation, I was just reminded of it by the previous message from Bee.
I DO wonder why they did it that way though. Maybe the lengths of those three titles took up more room than the Brian blurb?

Yes, well pointed out Briansong, false advertising indeed. I wonder if Mike Love could sue for this, claiming credit here where Brian has falsely received.
It may be minor and insignificant in the grand scheme of things, however it does show the carelessness of Capital or whoever was responsible.
