We're talking the Beach Boys 1973 album here, not the country of tulips and windmills, though that is where much of the album was recorded. Comment and rate here. Album archive entry at http://www.surfermoon.com/albums/holland2.shtml

Ah! At last.
For many reasons my favourite album. Has everything the band could have been. Every single damn track is tight, rocking, emotional, affective. Even a quirky if bizzare "fairy tale" at the end. Along with 20/20, Wild Honey and Pet Sounds music just does not get any better than this

The last great album the Beach Boys released. A 9.5. Superb tunes. Excellent variety. Fresh ideas and forward thinking. That Endless Summer's success seems responsible for putting an end to this direction of creativity/of thinking is just such a damn shame.
I would have been more than happy to grow alon with them...but.........it was not to be.
15 Big Ones was such a disappointment after an album of this quality.

"No Wilsons...NO Beach Boys." I find it impossible to argue with THAT.

The last mature BB's album. Wish there had been more like this.

In many ways my favorite BeachBoys album. I like it all. I like Mt. Vernon and Fairway.
I like California Saga/California/Big Sur. I like Steamboat. I like Sail on Sailor.
And you get Blondie and Ricky. As someone else said, their last great album and just unbelievable that it was followed a full three years later by 15 big ones.
I could have gone on indefinitely with the direction they were taking with Holland.

Nearly perfect. Could've done with leaving We Got Love on. Other than that, no duff tunes, an the EP is pure Brian. Hidden gem = Steamboat.

The abstract Americana of this LP strongly echoes SMILE. Did Rieley and Carl plan this, or was it a happy accident? A good one, although "Funky Pretty" is average at best.

One of the very best from this band. Great songwriting contributions from everybody in the group, including the sometimes unreliable Mike and Al who provide the songs for "California Saga". Carl brought in "The Trader", his best, and Dennis provided "Steamboat" and "Only With You" which is right up there with Sunflower's "Forever" as my favorite Dennis tune. The album also includes Brian's "Sail On Sailor" the last classic Beach Boys track. Unfortunately, the album was a near-miss commercially and "Sail On Sailor" missed the top 40. Endless Summer was the next album after this one and heralded the Beach Boys next phase as a nostalgia act. They never came up with anything nearly this good afterward.

I loved the EP too. The main album had a great collection of tracks although Beaks of Eagles doesn't stand up too well to me, except as a way of letting California start so well.

A soild 8, if not perhaps an 8.5. The last great group effort (since Love You is great, but it's more Brian's deal).
This is also one of the last albums to have pretty much all good songs, but my big favorites are: Sail On, Sailor California Saga/California The Trader Only With You (possibly my favorite song on the album; BEAUTIFUL wedding song)
I love Mt. Vernon And Fairway too. Pure Brian....sometimes it's too goofy, sometimes it nearly brings tears to my eyes.
It would have been soo good if the BBs continued making records like this. Alas...

Holland is a truly collaborative effort, something missing from their later efforts. Love You was Brian's baby, MIU was mostly Mike and Al with Brian also on board (reluctantly?), LA was mostly Carl and Dennis, KTSA was the group minus Dennis. Each of those albums have their moments (although MIU's a far and few between IMHO), but compile the best of the 4 onto 2 records and you'd have some very enjoyable albums. Holland is just fine as it is, although I was disappointed they didn't add "We Got Love" for the CD reissue. I've always liked the version on The Beach Boys In Concert.

I also don't care too much for Beaks Of Eagles, either, and would have rather had We Got Love in its stead. The last great album of new material before the band became the jukebox oldies act they've pretty much been for the last 30 years.

Aways happy to come back to this thread. Every tracks a winner for me including Beaks and the usual dirge from Flame thta actually fits in here....and makes the demise of the band as a force in pop/rock music all the more puzzling. I suspect the vaults were dry after this and this just shows what a really poor song writing band they were without Brian on board. Not much from Brian here of course but his spirit and off gem kept the standard up...no exceeded that.... and gave them their best album in many respects and a hint of what they could have become.
A top 20 HIT in the UK and was very well received at the time....
