Pretty much THE perfect summer album. My favourite Beach Boys lp up til the Pet Sounds release. Definitely a 10.

"No Wilsons...NO Beach Boys." I find it impossible to argue with THAT.

The first really great BB allbum. There would have been no Endless Summer without the material from this album.

Its also my first BB album. Fell in love with "Wendy" when I heard it on Radio Caroline one late night. Didn't have a clue who those harmonies were until I asked in my local record store. The rest is history. The whole album just fizzes along. Sheer brilliance and happy , happy, happy music. Ladies and gentlemen I give you THE BEACH BOYS.......

In many respects its the best album of them all. Summed up everything they were about with, as you say, a great album cover and some trademark songs. Quality stuff

A superb bridge between the first three surf-y albums, the advanced production of Shut Down Vol 2 and the later Today/ Summer Days combo. Wonderful.
Best song = Hushabye

I give this an 8. It's close to a 9 though and I wish I could give it an 8.5. I Get Around: The first #1 hit for the band. One of their greatest hits. 9.5 out of 10. All Summer Long: Another great summer song. 9 out of 10. Hushabye: What a cover! Amazing harmonies highlight this track. 8 out of 10. Little Honda: Another classic car song witha great beat. 8.5 out of 10. We'll Run Away: Have I mentioned Brian does great ballads 7.5 out of 10. Carl's Big Chance: Another track that shows Carl's great instrumental writing ablities. 6.5 out of 10. Wendy: Another great love song. Not abotu Brian's daughter. 8 out of 10. Do You Remember?: Nice little song about the history of rock. 6 out of 10. Girls on the Beach: Another lovely ballad. 7 out of 10. Drive-In: Not a great song but it uses techniques that were ahead of it's time. 6 out of 10. Our Favorite Recording Sessions: Why is this on the album? 2 out of 10 Don't Back Down: An underrated gem. 9 out of 10.

Terrific album. It's a shame that a few tracks drag it down, though. If you grab all the good songs from this album and all the good songs from Shut Down, Volume 2, you'd have one heck of an album. Anyway:
1. I Get Around: One of the most exciting singles of the 1960s, if not ever, and the result of Brian's competitive nature. 10. 2. All Summer Long: Stone-cold classic and yet somehow underrated at the same time. 10. 3. Hushabye: Another wonderful doo wop cover (like 'Why Do Fools Fall In Love') that's probably better than the original. The harmonies are out of this world. 9.5. 4. Little Honda: sometimes I love it and sometimes I think it's just too goofy. It'll do. 8.5. 5. We'll Run Away: Beautiful song. Second best track on this album, after. 'Girls On The Beach'. 10. 6. Carl's Big Chance: Filler. 6. 7. Wendy: Terrific song with cool intro. 9.5 8. Do You Remember?: It's okay, I suppose. Dig the high voice wail! 6.5 9. Girls On The Beach: Perfect in every way. My favorite song on the album. 10. 10. Drive-In: Nice backing track. Goofy lyrics. 7. 11. Our Favorite Recording Sessions: Filler. 6. 12. Don't Back Down: Incredible. That chorus is outta site. 9.5
The overall best pre-Today! album.

The quintessential BB's album. If you had to try and explain the BB's to invading extraterrestrials - this would be the album to play them.

Totally fantastic album!
Unfortunately there's still one track which needs skipping, Carl's Big Chance... but the rest is sublime. Even Our Favourite Recording Sessions raises a chuckle and doesn't detract from the overall greatness.
I never realised how good Don't Back Down is until I saw Mike and Bruce's band perform it this year- I always seem to leave a concert with a new-found love of a song I previously wasn't too bothered about.

One fun sing-a-long summer album that sets the bar pretty high. Favorite track 'Don't Back Down' and 'Wendy'. Weakest, that are very weak, 'Carl's Big Chance' and 'Our Favorite recording Sessions' the latter doesn't deserve to be on any album let alone this one.

You'll never find someone listening to The Beach Boys sitting inside a psychiatrist's office.

This album includes everything that made The Beach Boys great. I remember listening to all the songs and realizing that Brian Wilson and his cousin Mike Love were great songwriters. * * * * *

1964 was a entry year for listening to popular music. A lot of kids started listening to the radio, sitting through the grown-up stuff on Sullivan waiting to see the bands, and gathering at someone's turntable this year because of The Beatles.
So what were the memorable records? As singles go, I'd argue all of the Fabs' releases, the Animals' "House of the Rising Sun," our guys' "I Get Around," the Drifters' "Under the Boardwalk," The Supremes' "Where Did Our Love Go," the RBs' "Lovin Feeling," Orbison's "Pretty Woman," maybe - maybe some other Liverpooly stuff like "How Do You Do It" and "Needles and Pins," P&B's "World Without Love" again only possibly, The Zombies' "She's Not There," the Kinks "You Really Got Me," the Shangri Las "Leader of the Pack," of course the Gilberto "Girl from Ipanema," and I guess Streisand's "People." Petula Clark's "Downtown." Roger Miller's "Dang Me" and possibly "Do Wacka Do." Gale Garnett's "We'll Sing in the Sunshine."
Albums, though? I'd think the main ones are soemthing like:
1. A Hard Day's Night/Something New. The Beatles. 2. The Beatles Second Album. 3. Soundtrack, Mary Poppins 4. All Summer Long, The Beach Boys 5. Getz/Gilberto - Stan Getz, Joao Gilberto 6. Soundtrack, The Pink Panther (which might ought to be higher up) 7. Beatles 65 8. Original Cast, Funny Girl 9. Dang Me/Chug-a-Lug, Roger Miller. 10. Live at the Regal, B.B. King
Which of these do you leave out to include Coltrane's "A Love Supreme?" Maybe a Beatles album, but I was being a b it disingenuous not including Meat the Beatles in the first place. And Introducing the Bealtes, a k a Please Please Me.
Long term, Another Side of Bob Dylan had similar impact, but not that year. Long-term, its songs were covered by The Byrds, the Turtles, Sonny & Cher, Dino, Desi and Billy.
Anyway, if you squeeze in another youth-orienetdd album, it's either Where Did Our Love Go or 12x5. I don't think either is as good an album as this one.
