Can we ever measure the impact that Monica, Chandler and the gang had on society...ooops, wrong Friends... However, many see the Beach Boys 1968 album as an unknown classic. Your comments here, please

While there are a couple of weaker moments...there are some real gems on this lp.  Has a SMiLE like opening and a glorious moment from Dennis.  This is an 8.  I've owned 2 copies on vinyl and 2 on cd...'cause I keep wearing it out.

Can never make my mind up about this one. Too soporific for me. Did them no favours as a band with the general public and it didn't really advance their musical development any although a top 20 hit in the UK it bombed big time in the US. After the first two excellant tracks it dies for me but always stays pleasent...which on a BB album is just not enough. It has a hint towards some of the more excruciating tracks whos style resurfaced latter on in things like Love You in When A Man Needs A Woman. Having said all that its still a classic of the type only a BB fan enjoys and theres no harm it that of course.

I love this one.  This might be my fave BB album, gun to my head.  "Diamond Head" alone is worth the price of admission...and the jarring TM song at the end is hilarious!  Long Live Friends!!!

I listen occasionally.  I really enjoy some of the songs....Busy Doin Nothin, Diamond head, Meant for you, and a couple of others.  But the album seems ......well, sort of like treading water. No direction, just pleasantly stoned.   No great strides made just a nice little album. A quiet little album.

I'm not crazy about the falsetto on this album (be here in the morning and on the title cut).  I feel the same way about Sunflower on this point.

And that TM thing............gimme a break!

Certainly very far from their worst albums.

Overall I like it better than Surfs Up, CATP, and everything after Holland.

Eight.  Ditch Transcendental Meditation and Diamond Head (too uninteresting), and put a coupla other things on there, and it'd be their best.  Hidden gem = Be Here In The Morning.

Mmmmmmmmm.  Lovely.  Like eating ice cream in the park on a hot Summer's day.

No direction, just pleasantly stoned.

But is this a bad thing?  I hear that being "just pleasantly stoned" is a nice way to spend a sunny afternoon.  And i agree that the album DOES feel like that...and that's one of the things i like about it.

To second Patel, FRIENDS is like that nice summer day you enjoy immensely, even if not a lot happens. I can remember the songs going through my brain while swimming at the pool a few years ago. Took me awhile to warm up to FRIENDS, possibly because I first heard it a day or so after Dennis Wilson drowned. Even so "Little Bird" was my initial favorite.

  1) As noted before, there's no aural or songwriting evidence of Bruce being around for this album. AGD has mentioned that several session sheets from the period credit him with singing on it, but you'd never know. Odd that he had no hand in the "let's team up together" writing credits. I wish someone would unravel this mystery by just asking him!

  2) At various times, I've thought the high voice on "Be Here in the Morning" is Brian, Marilyn, or Al. It's Al, right?

  3) "Be Still" could fit in on some of the post-Barrett, pre-MEDDLE Floyd efforts.

  4) I'd give FRIENDS an 8.

Nice easygoing lp and also a return to form. The signature Beach Boys vocals are back and the production is full. A couple of missteps prevent this from being a 10. I gave it a 9 though - it's one of my favorites. As the booklet in the reissue stated, "I Went To Sleep", issued on 20/20, would have been a good addition to this one in place of "Trancendental Meditation" although that one has sone quirky appeal for me (and some outstanding drumming as well by a very good session musician). It's a little short though - good thing they coupled it with 20/20 on the reissue.

A nice little album, some wonderful vocals, I don't like it as much as Wild Honey, but still some good music to cool down with.

I gave it an 8:

Meant For You: Best 39 second song ever  Grin 8.5/10

Friends: Nice song to really kick start this mellow album. 9/10

Wake the World: Nice little song about day and night. 7.5/10

Be Here in the Mornin': I still can't believe that's Al on lead and not Brian! Nice little song. Begining of the song reminds me of the intro on Whistle in. 7/10

When a Man Needs a Woman: Cure little song about parenthood. 7/10

Passing By: Nice little instrumental, nothing more. 6.5/10

Anna Lee, the Healer: Don't like it. Not even the Boys best song about a masseuse! 2/10

Little Bird: Another great song that proves Dennis could write. 8.5/10

Be Still: Well, Denny couldn't write good songs all the time! 4/10

Busy Doin' Nothin: Great song by Brian about his daily life. Very underrated. 8.5/10

Diamond Head: Great instrumental that make you feel like you're in Hawaii. 7.5/10

Transcendental Meditation: What the heck is this awful song doing here? 0/10
