Well, in Susan's terms, we're going from the hell  of Looking Back With Love to the heaven of Pacific Ocean Blue- what are your views? Overrated cult album, or a treasure that is unforgivably unavailable to the public

LOL!!!!  I was thinking, "Ahhhhh....now THIS is an ALBUM!!!"

No surprises here; i love this album.  It is a permanent member of my Top Five Desert Island picks.  I love Dennis' voice, his songs, the odd rhythms that come out of nowhere; i love the rawness of the emotions...the backing vocals...the arrangements...that lone trumpet in "Thoughts of You," sounding so lonely and sad...what a frickin' gorgeous album this one is.

Susan sums up this criminally unavailable album quite succinctly -- frickin' gorgeous. An almost overpowering, incredibly moving statement from the Beach Boy so often labeled as untalented, simply because he was the drummer and sex symbol.

His heart-on-the-sleeve ballads from the early '70s -- Lady (Fallin' In Love), Barbara, Make It Good, Cuddle Up and Only With You -- are also very worthy of praise.

Almost perfect, but the second track ruins the vibe for me and some of the fade-outs sound forced... but I'm *trying* to be critical here!

Still probably the best BB alumni solo album. Yep, even more so than BWPS... IMO.

Cheers,
O!
PS. Oh yeah, and I gave it an eight.

Why only an 8?  And if you gave this an 8, what did you give BWPS?

Probably an 8 as well... but a slightly lower 8.

;-)

An 8.  Sometimes a little draggy and somewhat unpolished/incomplete.  Still...next to SMiLE the finest solo lp...along with Brian's first.

Dennis was the ONLY guy in the group who learned anything from Brian in terms of writing and being in the studio.  Anything meaningful I mean.  That he was thought of by the other guys in the band as good old expendable Dennis the age-old 'F'-up cheated us of some GREAT tracks on many a group album I would think.

It also contributed to his crashing and burning would be my guess.  Imagine having ALL that talent and then not being taken seriously...  A blinkin' scandal that speaks to the talent level of those who made the decisions.

I gave it a 3. My views are fairly well known but to be fair its a 3 because of the horrible production. I am certain that a clean, full stereo production will give me a thrill of finding a hidden treasure.

You can thank engineer Steve Moffitt for his opaque mixing, completely submerging the very first BBs solo LP in a sea of murk and goosh.

Personally, I think it adds to the experience, hearing Dennis project his naked emotions through the muck of higher powers, but that's just me.

I've heard one or two tracks that Moffitt did not engineer...they're stunning.  Eventually, this album WILL come out, clean and clear, and we're all going to fall in love with it all over again.

I had no idea the alternate/better mix had leaked.

I hope you're right and it's released soon.

Better yet, make it a Denny archives box please!

Cheers,
O!

Allow me to clarify: It has NOT leaked.  I heard it from someone authorized to have it.

And it's not an alternate mix, Owen...it's Dennis' mix!!  Moffitt's came second.

To clarify further, there are people in the bootleg world who have this mix. It just hasn't been widely circulated. You'd be surprised how much Dennis material hasn't come to light.

And...you know...i'd sure like to hear it again.  This is a primo album sounding like mud.  It is a gem of the universe when it's clear!

I bought this Album some times ago as a vinyl .. for about 35 US-D! What should I have to say exept...itīs great. My favorite solo work of all the Beach Boys. "River song", "Moonshine", "Time" "Thought of you"... and so on, are sooo great songs! I think - in the mid and late 70th - Dennis was the heart, the soul and the genius of all the Beach Boys! He was the greatest and ... itīs so sad, that his first solo Album (with Mr. Dragon) and his "Bamboo" never find the way to be an official release...
